BlackCraft Cult sat down with I Killed the Prom Queen’s Jona Weinhofen at this year’s Van’s Warped Tour. Check out the interview below-
Name: Jona Weinhofen
Residing in: Orange County, CA/Adelaide, South Australia
1) Who or what inspired you to be doing what you’re doing?
Growing up through high school I knew I wanted to play music for a living. I have been inspired by many different people, everyone from my peers and fellow musicians in high school, to my band mates and best friends throughout the years and some of my favorite bands. I can definitely attribute a lot of my inspiration to the Adelaide band Day Of Contempt, both for writing and playing great music, and touring the world doing what I love.
2) Favorite band right now?
There are so many amazing bands right now but a couple who have really been getting a lot of play on my Spotify account are Lights and Motion, Immanu El, and Turboweekend. They are all very different musically to my band, however they still inspire me when it comes to writing any of my music. And Chris from Lights and Motion actually worked on some I Killed the Prom Queen songs with me during the recording of “Beloved”.
3) Best part or touring?
Visiting amazing vegan restaurants around the world, seeing incredible places, and spending time with my closest friends.
4) Advice for up and coming bands?
Don’t pursue a career in music if you’re hoping to get rich. You need to be truly passionate and if that passion is strong enough you may still find fulfillment without becoming a rockstar.
5) Life tip?
Kindness is a virtue I try to live by. Treating others with kindness, even if it’s a random act to a stranger on the street can be incredibly fulfilling. Pay it forward.
6) What are you grateful for?
Finding love, having such a supportive family and the best group of friends I could ever hope for. And being able to live the dream day in and day out playing music and traveling the world.
7) 1st tattoo?
An old school sailor style dagger on the tops of my shoulders cutting through my neck. I was 19 years old.
8) Favorite quote?
“Nothing will benefit health and increase the chances for survival on Earth as the evolution to a vegetarian diet”- Albert Einstein.
9) Favorite Blackcraft item?
My Beverly Hills 666 tank top. That thing has been with me on every tour over the past 18 months.
10) What does Blackcraft mean to you?
Blackcraft to me represents being an individual, not conforming to the status quo, giving yourself the credit for intelligence and the respect you deserve.
